Giga Factories Update
Tesla’s Gigafactories are ramping up! Giga Berlin is now producing 350 Model Ys per week, and is aiming to produce 1000 per week by the month’s end.
Currently, GigaBerlin produces Model Ys equipped with the older 2170 battery cells, something CEO Elon Musk hopes to have updated to the new 4680 cells within a few months.
The 2170 equipped Model Y vehicles coming out of Berlin are the first bunch since the factory opened last month; and the ramp up to 1000 units per week is a pretty achievable goal - even considering small problems like leaks.
Some of you folks might remember that the reason GigaBerlin took so long to approve was that it was making use of a local water supply that the Brandenburg government was required to protect. Well, as it turns out, they had reason to be cautious.
Local reports say that a water-polluting liquid leak began in GigaBerlin’s paint shop due to a valve not being closed. However, the systems Tesla installed caught and contained the leak before the liquid could escape. All the relevant agencies were informed, and everything was cleared up without issue.
And speaking of swift action, another Gigafactory is also back to producing, as GigaShanghai’s workers were called back to the facility as work was being planned to start this Tuesday. This comes after a three week shutdown, as Shanghai was swept with another wave of COVID and locked down to prevent spread.
Giga Shanghai can reportedly produce about 2100 vehicles per day, so a three week loss will be noticeable in their numbers for the quarter. But, with any luck, the pandemic won’t force another closure and GigaShanghai can get back into the swing of things soon.
