“Massive Expansion,” Elon Talks Future Plans
On March 17th, Elon Musk announced he was working on his Master Plan 3, which was to revolve around a massive scaling up of his companies, he explained in a follow-up tweet on March 21st.
Historically, Elon has broadcasted his “Master Plans” whenever there has been some major shift in his focus. Master Plan 1, way back in 2006, discussed Tesla’s plan on entering the affordable vehicle market by gradually changing its offerings from the pricey Roadster to vehicles like the Model 3.
Master Plan 2 (“Part Deux” as Musk called it), written a whole decade later, was focused on more threads. It outlined the intention to have a Tesla vehicle of every type - heavy-duty trucks, SUVs, Pickups, etc. It also outlined Tesla’s expansion of its energy systems, like Solar Roofs, and the Tesla Network, which relied on systems like the FSD.
But while Master Plan 1 achieved most of its stated goals, Part Deux appears to have faltered. Tesla has certainly increased its ability to produce vehicles, and expanded its energy systems, but vehicle proliferation has proven tricky. Tesla Semi and Cybertruck are both waiting in pre-production. The Solar Roof systems are also facing delays, and the FSD system is progressing but certainly slower than was hoped.
So why start on Plan 3 if Part Deux hasn’t met its goals, nor even had the same time that Plan 1 had? Well, the answer might have to do with the last part of Musk’s tweet. “I will also include sections about SpaceX, Tesla, and The Boring Company”.
Lots of folks think this is hinting that Musk aims to pull all his disparate companies together under one parent company, something the billionaire has favorably discussed before. And this makes sense, especially as Tesla ramps up production to become the most prolific EV producer in the world. Elon’s going to need a solution for organizing and leading all his companies if he plans to upscale.
