AI Day Postponed
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via tweet on June 2nd that the company’s second AI would be postponed - but in a good way.
The Optimus robot was a huge draw to last year’s AI day, and a priority for Tesla’s AI team. The bot is intended to perform simple, repetitive tasks in an effort to replace humans in that usually tedious and dangerous labour market.
“For this robot, we’re trying to be as literal as possible: Can it do boring, dangerous, repetitive jobs that people don’t want to do. You know, once you have it do that, maybe it can do other things too…I mean, maybe it could be your buddy, too. I’m sure people will think of some very creative uses,” - Elon Musk, CEO Tesla
Obviously the day won’t be taken up by just futuristic, humanoid robot prototypes. Las year’s event showed off intricate aspects of Tesla’s Full Self Driving software and its many intricacies, as well as their Dojo supercomputer, and the Neural Network.
And they can go into the details at this show because its focus isn’t really on showcasing the AI projects to us, the technophiles. AI day, according to Musk, is about attracting the best and brightest AI engineers to Tesla.
But it’s not like we get nothing out of it of course. The tech on display is incredibly cool, and getting to see it all displayed on such an open stage is not something we get very often. And this year, the advances in FSD and NeuraLink alone would be enough to headline this show.
So if we need to wait until September for a chance to see Optimus walking around, then we’re definitely not complaining.
