China Gets Model Y in Record Time

Tesla China recently updated their site to show that the standard Model Y RWD - which is the entry-level version of the vehicle - now has an estimated delivery time of 1-4 weeks; half as long as it was previously.

Almost every other model produced at Giga Shanghai has a significantly longer wait time; with the Long Range and Performance versions of the Model Y needing a wait time of 16-20 weeks and 12-16 weeks respectively.

This is likely down to the recent upgrades to the Giga Shanghai facility, and the popularity of the standard version of the Model Y in China. Over 140,000 Model Y RWD vehicles were sold in the first seven months of this year.

And Giga Shanghai has repeatedly met - and beat - its production targets this year, even with several shutdowns due to local COVID procedures and the aforementioned upgrades.

It could also just be that Giga Shanghai is focusing on the base Model Y first, and turning their attention to other models afterwards. We’ll just have to wait and see how Shanghai ramps up in the coming months.
