GigaBerlin Upgrades Complete

The wait is over in Germany as Tesla’s GigaBerlin plant has announced that the upgrades to the facility have been completed.

The factory was shutdown on July 11th, as major upgrades to the production lines necessitated a disruption in operations.

Planned to be completed by July 22nd, the company announced that it completed the work on schedule, and has been spending the intervening time making some test vehicles using the new tech.

The new features available with the upgrades are mostly for the Model Y. Single-piece front casting using the new Giga Press machine there, as well as a rear-wheel drive option, and a white interior, were all options tested successfully.

In addition to those, the upgrades allow for Model Ys with structural battery packs and 4680 battery cells, which are currently being imported from Giga Texas.

There’s no word yet on when these upgrades will be put into full production, but it’s not a bad bet that Tesla might be waiting for the addition of the third workshift they will be adding to the facility in the fall.

Good to see GigaBerlin chugging along. It’s been pretty consistently improving output this whole year, and these upgrades can only help that. The numbers from the last two quarters of this year will be interesting to see.
