Tesla Looks to Canada

Tesla has been hinting lately that their next Gigafactory might well be located in Canada.

With a little bit of digging, it was discovered by Electric Autonomy Canada that Tesla had updated their lobbying registry to include a specific focus on Canada - and even more specifically with the Ontario government.

As usual, it’s not just information from a company registry that we’ve heard this Canada talk from. Elon himself has quipped about it recently.

At the recent Tesla Cyber Roundup, the Tesla CEO was asked about when and where another gigafactory might break ground:

[...] we might be able to announce another factory location later this year, [...] I’m half Canadian, so maybe I should,
— Elon Musk, CEO, Tesla

Obviously Elon likes to tease Tesla fans with ideas that don’t often come to fruition, but the extra lobbying focus lends some extra weight to this exchange.

Ontario makes a lot of sense as well. It has several internationally trafficked cities, and extensive nickel infrastructure.

And beyond that, Tesla would need to make a couple of gigafactories in Canada to hit their goal of 20 million vehicles sold per year by 2030. Musk said Tesla would be building around 10 to 12 gigafactories to hit this milestone, so we should probably expect gigafactory announcements for other provinces - and other countries - in the near future.
