Texas Approves Megapack Project

GigaTexas is growing again, as it was reported that the facility got approval for its own Megapack battery energy storage system (BESS) facility just last week.

While there’s no word on how much capacity the battery farm will have, the application with the City of Austin, Texas lists the allowable land at 53.27 acres.

And that makes sense, Tesla’s BESS projects can secure a lot of power, but GigaTexas is gigantic, and with Texas’ power grid being so unreliable, it’s natural they’d want to ensure a constant powerflow in case a couple of snowflakes fall.

Tesla has been making massive headway with their Megapack projects lately; forging relationships around the world while developing their energy technology. Most of their big projects - like their facilities in South Australia and Hawaii - can power about 3600 homes for an hour under ideal circumstances.

GigaTexas is Tesla’s lynchpin project in North America. It produces their most advanced vehicles, and has plans to have a full 4680 battery production line. Tesla has said that once complete, the gigafactory should be able to put out between 500,00 and 1 million vehicles. Keeping that facility operating under any conditions was always going to be a priority for the company.

This BESS is obviously going to be massive to accommodate the needs of the gigafactory; we’ll just have to wait for the stats to come out.
